The development of a non-linear numerical model of reinforced concrete in the vicinity of edge columns is presented. The model uses a “stepped” grillage analysis that idealises the slab as an interconnected assembly of beam elements. The layout of the grillage members, simulation of the boundary conditions, column support and loading are discussed. The determination and distribution of member properties associated with the different loading stages are considered. The distribution of deformations and moments in the slab and column obtained from the non-linear numerical model is compared with the experimental results obtained from a series of one-third scale experimental slabs constructed and tested at Queen’s University, Belfast (QUB). The numerical model is also applied to the full-scale in situ concrete framed building, the European Concrete Building Project, constructed by the Building Research Establishment at Cardington, England.
