سرمایه‌گذاری مستقیم خارجی (با نماد اختصاری FDI) عبارت است از سرمایه‌گذاری یک شرکت یا شخص حقیق در کشوری دیگر جهت تجارت یا تولید. از منظر علم اقتصاد، این فعالیت در نقطه مقابل سرمایه‌گذاری در سهام قرار می‌گیرد که سرمایه‌گذاری‌ای تاثیرپذیر از شرایط اقتصادی کشور هدف محسوب می‌شود. سرمایه گذاری خارجی معمــولاً به دو طریق، سرمایه گذاری سهامی (غیر مستقیم) و سرمایه گذاری مستقیم خارجی صورت می گیرد. خرید اوراق قرضه و سهام شرکت ها در معاملات بورس و قبوض سپرده در بانک های خارجی از انواع سرمایه گذاری سهام دارانه هستند که در این حالت سرمایه گذار خارجی در اداره واحد تولیدی نقش مستقیم نداشته و مسئولیت مالینیز متوجه وی نیست. اما سرمایه گذاری مستقیم خارجی، نوعی سرمایه گذاری است که به منظور کسب منفعت دائمی و همیشگی در مؤسسه ای مستقر در کشوری غیر از کشور سرمایه گذار صورت می گیرد و نتیجه آن کسب حق رأی مؤثر در مدیریت شرکت است. مطالعات نشان می دهد که سرمایه گذاری مستقیم خارجی به هر علت و شکلی که صورت پذیرد، اثرات قابل ملاحظه ای بر روی متغیرهای کلان اقتصادی از جمله کاهش نرخ بهره، کاهش نرخ ارز، افزایش رشد اقتصادی، افزایش درآمد مالیاتی دولت، کاهش بدهی دولت، بهبود توزیع درآمد، انتقال تکنولوژی، افزایش اشتغال، توسعه صادرات، کاهش واردات و تاثیر مثبت در تراز پرداخت ها دارد.
