تولید ناب یا Lean Manufacturing اصطلاحی است که جان گرافسیک (John Krafcik) پژوهشگر IMPV-International Motor Vehical Program بر نهاده است. از این رو ناب نامیده می‌شود که در مقایسه با تولید انبوه هر چیز را به میزان کمتر مورد استفاده قرار می‌دهد، این شیوه تولید، نیروی انسانی موجود در کارخانه ، فضای لازم برای تولید،سرمایه ای که صرف ابزارآلات می شود، نیروی مهندسی لازم برای بوجود آوردن محصول جدید و زمان مورد نیاز برای ساخت محصول جدید را به نصف تقلیل می دهد.همچنین در تولید ناب موجودی (Inventory) مورد نیاز به کمتر از نصف می رسد، عیب ها بسیار کمتر می‌شود و محصولات با تنوع فزاینده تولید می‌شوند. تولید ناب تلفیقی از تولید دستی و تولید انبوه است.به شکلی که انعطاف پذیری در تولید را از تولید دستی و قیمت ارزان کالا تولید شده را از تولید انبوه وام می‌گیرد. به طور کلی فلسفه تولیدی تولید ناب اینست که زمان تدارکی بین سفارش مشتری و ارسال محصولات و قطعات را با از بین بردن انواع اتلافها کوتاه می‌کند. تولید ناب در واقع شیوه تولیدی است که ضمن به کار گیری فواید تولید انبوه و تولید دستی با هدف کاهش ضایعات و حذف هرفعالیت بدون ارزش افروده شکل گرفته است.بر این مبنا تکنیک ناب با کمک مجموعه ابزارهای خود می تواند نقش بنیادی در اصلاح و بهبود فرایندها داشته باشد.
