به هر ماده‌ای که جریان الکتریسیته را به خوبی از خود عبور دهد، رسانا یا هادی میگویند.رساناهای متداول از سیم مسی تقریباً خالص و دارای انعطاف قابل قبول یا از آلومینیوم یا آلیاژهای مخصوص ساخته میشوند. سطح مقطع رساناها با توجه به مقدار جریان عبوری و نوع کاربرد در اندازهای گوناگون و شکلهای متفاوت درست می‌شود. اگر اتمی در لایهٔ آخر خود ۱ یا ۲ الکترون داشته باشد آن رسانا خواهد بود.
برای پی بردن به دلیل رسانش می‌‌توان ساختمان مواد رسانا را مورد توجه قرار داد. از جمله مواد رسانای بسیار معروف فلزات هستند. ویژگی عمده فلزات از نظر خصوصیت الکتریکی این است که این مواد دارای الکترونهای آزاد هستند. این الکترونها را اصطلاحا حاملین بار میگویند. هنگامی که اتمهای منزوی برای تشکیل جسم جامد فلزی با هم ترکیب میشوند، الکترونهای لایه خارجی اتم ، مقید به اتمهای منفرد باقی نمی‌‌مانند، بلکه آزادانه در سرتاسر حجم جسم جامد حرکت می‌‌کنند.
بهترین رساناهای الکتریکی به ترتیب گرافن، نقره ، مس، طلا و آلومینیوم هستند.
