در اواسط سال 1960 رقابت بازار کار بسیار شدید شد. از سال 1960 تا 1970 هزینه ها بسیار مورد اهمیت قرار می گرفتند. اما بعد کیفیت در اولویت قرار گرفت. و هنگامیکه سرعت دریافت، موردی شد که مشتریان به آن نیاز پیدا کردند، بازار کار بیشتر و بیشتر پیچیده تر شد. یک راهبرد جدیدی تنظیم شد: ( قابلیت بهبود دادن به سیستم براساس نیاز مشتری ). شرکت ها مجبور بودند در تمام کارهایشان خود را با محیط وفق دهند،تا اینکه بیشتر در اعمال خود انعطاف پذیر باشند و در بخش های مختلف بازار کار راضی باشند. (customizability). بنابراین ابداع FMS با تلاش برای دستیابی به منافع قابل رقابت، مرتبط شد. قبل از هر چیز ، FMS یک تکنولوژی تولید می باشد. دوم اینکه ،FMS یک فلسفه است. که system کلمه ی کلیدی آن است. از نظر فلسفه FMS سیستم را با دیدگاه ساخت ترکیب می کند. کلمه ای که امروزه سازنده ها زمزمه میکنند چالاکی است. یک سازنده ی چابک کسی است که در بازار کار سریعترین است، با کمترین هزینه کارها را انجام میدهد و بیشترین توانایی را در حفظ کردن مشتریش دارد. به طور ساده FMS راه حلی است که سازنده ها را قادر میسازد تا به حفظ کردن مشتری دست یابند. مطالعه MIT روی نکات رقابتی اشاره شده ،چیزی است که شرکت های امریکایی دو برابر اینکه کالا اختراع کنند به آن می پردازند. آلمانی ها و ژاپنی ها دقیقا مخالف آن کار می کنند. در مطالعه ی FMS ، ما نیاز داریم که به خاطر بسپاریم که چرا پیتر دراکر (Peter Drucker) گفت: ما باید مدیران تکنولوژی باشیم نه اینکه صرفا استفاده کنندگان تکنولوژی باشیم. از آنجایی که FMS یک تکنولوژی است،به خوبی برای نیازهای محیطی تنظیم شده است و ما باید آن را با موفقیت مدیریت کنیم. امروزه انعطاف پذیری در تولید به تولید با بها و هزینه ی معقولانه و بهبود دادن تولیدات به بالاترین کیفیت که بتواند به سرعت به دست مشتری ها برسد، معنی شده است.
