خشونت خانگی به معنی رفتار خشونت آمیز و سلطه گرانه یک عضو خانواده علیه عضو یا اعضای دیگر همان خانواده است. خشونت خانگی واقعیتی آزار دهنده و غیر قابل انکار در دنیای امروز است، در جهانی که محیط خانه می باید پناهگاهی باشد تا ساکنانش در آن بیاسایند و خستگی ها و رنج های ناشی از دشواری های محیط بیرون خانه را به فراموشی بسپارند، متاسفانه برای بسیاری از مردم، خانه به جهنمی می ماند که آتش دشمنی، خشم، خشونت، کینه و انتقام در آن هر لحظه شعله ورتر می شود. خشونت های خانگی مخصوص جامعه یا طبقه ی خاصی نیست، بلکه اکنون همه ی کشورهای دنیا و طبقات اجتماعی مختلف با آن دست به گریبانند و تغییر و تحولات اقتصادی، اجتماعی و فرهنگی هر روزه بر میزان آن افزوده است. در تعریف خشونت خانگی می توان گفت: «خشونت خانگی خشونتی است که در محیط (حوزه) خصوصی خانواده به وقوع می پیوندد و عمیقاً میان افرادی رخ می دهد که به سبب صمیمیت، ارتباط خونی یا قانونی به یکدیگر پیوند خورده اند.
