کلمه IQ مخفف Intelligence Quotient یا همان بهره هوشی است. این بهره هوشی سال هاست که به صورت تست مورد آزمایش قرار می‌گیرد و نشان می دهد توانایی و هوش هر فرد در مقابل جمعیت جهان چقدر است. تست فوق نمره استانداری دارد که میانگین آن 100 است. در اکثر این تست‌ها نمره‌ای بین 90 تا 110 هوش متوسط فرد را نشان می‌دهد. نمره بالای 130 هوش بالا را نشان می‌دهد و نمره زیر 70 نشانگر مشکلات مغزی فرد است. روانشناسان برای محاسبه بهره هوشی از فرمولی ساده استفاده می کنند.در این فرمول سن ذهنی فرد بر سن زمانی او تقسیم و سپس در عدد 100 ضرب می شود. اگر بخواهیم کمی این فرمول را ساده تر کنیممی توانیم بگوییم، اگر توانایی ذهنی فردی کاملا برابر با توانایی باشد که همسالان او در آن محدوده سنی دارند، بهره هوشی او مساوی با عدد 100 خواهد بود.
