A System-of-Systems perspective for information fusion system design and evaluation

یک سامانه/سیستم اطلاعاتی مجموعه‌ای از مؤلفه‌های وابسته به هم است که با گردآوری، پردازش، ذخیره و توزیع داده‌های اطلاعاتی، از تصمیم‌گیری و کنترل در سازمان‌ها پشتیبانی می‌کند. این سیستم علاوه بر کمک کردن به ایجاد هماهنگی در انجام عملیات سازمانی، به مدیران و کارکنان سازمان‌ها کمک می‌کند تا مسائل سازمان را تحلیل یا شبیه‌سازی نمایند.
سیستم‌های اطلاعاتی سه فعالیت عمده را انجام می‌دهند: ورود داده‌ها، پردازش و خروج داده‌ها.
انواع سیستم‌های اطلاعاتی به صورت کلاسیک به صورت یک هرم تقسیم بندی می‌شوند که سطح زیرین این هرم، سیستم‌های مدیریت تراکنش‌ها، لایه‌های بالاتر به‌ترتیب سیستم‌های اطلاعاتی مدیریت، سیستم‌های پشتیبان تصمیم‌گیری قرار دارند و در لایهٔ بالایی هرم نیز سیستم‌های مدیریت اجرایی قرار دارد. این تقسیم‌بندی از سال ۱۹۸۰ متداول بوده است.
با این حال، در سال‌های اخیر، برخی از انواع سیستم‌های اطلاعاتی متداول شده‌اند که نمی‌توان آنها را در مدل کلاسیک تقسیم‌بندی سیستم‌های اطلاعاتی جانمایی کرد. برخی از این سیستم‌های اطلاعاتی عبارتند :
• انبار داده
• برنامه‌ریزی منابع سازمانی
• سیستم‌های خبره
• موتورهای جستجو
• سامانه‌های اطلاعات جغرافیایی
• سیستم‌های اتوماسیون اداری
