این شیوه درمان به قدمت پیدایش تمدن است و اولین تلاشهایی که انسانها برای هدایت افراد همنوع خود و بهبود رفتار آنان انجام داده‌اند، نقطه آغازین آن است. اما به لحاظ علمی می‌توان گفت که رفتار درمانی به دنبال مکتب روانشناسی رفتارگرا بوجود آمده است و در واقع اصول و قوانین این مکتب روان شناسی کاربرد درمانی دارد. رفتاردرمانی (behavior therapy) اصطلاحی است برای چند روش درمانی گوناگون که همگی بر نظریه یادگیری پایه‌گذاری شده‌اند. رفتار درمانگران بر این باور هستند که رفتارهای غیرانطباقی رفتارهائی هستند که آدمی برای کنار آمدن با فشار روانی آنها را یاد می‌گیرد، و می‌توان به یاری فنونی که از کارهای آزمایشگاهی در مورد یادگیری برآمده است پاسخ‌های مناسب‌تری را جایگزین آنها کرد. در حالی‌که روانکاوی در پی شناخت چگونگی تأثیر تعارض‌های گذشته آدمی بر رفتار او است، رفتاردرمانی مستقیماً به خود رفتار می‌پردازد.
برخلاف روانکاوی که در پی تغییر شخصیت است، رفتاردرمانی هدف نسبتاً محدودی دارد که عبارت است از تغییر رفتارهای غیرانطباقی در موقعیت‌های معین. علاوه بر این رفتار درمانگران بیش از روانکاوان به اعتبار علمی فنون خود توجه دارند. رفتار درمانگران توجه چندانی به ارائه نظریه‌ای در زمینه شخصیت نداشته‌اند. آنان در درجه اول این فرض را پذیرفته‌اند که اکثر رفتارهای انسان آموخته شده است و بنابراین می‌توان با استفاده از اصول یادگیری ، رفتارها را تعدیل کرد یا کلا تغییر داد.
