اگر یکی از اعضای خانواده دارای اشکال رفتاری ـ روانی باشد، می‌توان ردپای آن را در روابط خانوادگی جست‌وجو کرد. در بسیاری از موارد اشکال رفتاری عضو خانواده مانند کودک یا نوجوان مستقیما از روابط غلط خانوادگی سرچشمه می‌گیردکه بهره گیری از روشهای مورد نظر می تواند راهگشایی مشکلات خانواده گردد. خانواده‌درمانی به عنوان شاخه جدیدی از علم روانشناسی، در نیمه دوم قرن بیستم پدید آمد. خانواده درمانی مداخله‌ای است که بر تغییر تعاملات بین اعضای خانواده متمرکز است و در آن تلاش می‌شود کارکرد خانواده به عنوان واحدی متشکل از تک تک اعضای خانواده بهبود یابد. بالین گری که به خانواده درمانی می‌پردازد می‌کوشد الگوهای بین نسلی غیرقابل انعطافی را که سبب ناراحتی در درون افراد یا در روابط بین فردی می‌شود، درهم بشکند. در خانواده درمانی می‌توان دغدغه‌های هر یک از اعضای خانواده را مطرح نمود. اما این روش درمانی بیشتر بر روی کودکان موثر است. زیرا واقعیت روزمره کودکان مستقیما تحت تاثیر بافت خانواده قرار دارد. خانواده‌درمانی، نوعی گروه‌درمانی است که در آن، واحد درمانی، هسته خانوادگی است و در جلسات درمانی یک یا چند درمان‌گر با تمام اعضا خانواده(یا بخشی از آنها) سر و کار دارد و هدف از آن حل و فصل یا تخفیف تعارضات بیماری‌زا و اضطراب در درون واحد خانواده است.
