نوعی از روتور است که بیشتر در موتورهای القایی AC مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرد. در شکل کلی این نوع روتور از یک استوانه که بر روی محور سوار شده تشکیل شده. استوانه روتور دارای شیارهایی طولی است که با فاصله و عمقی یکسان از هم قرار گرفته‌اند و با نوعی هادی که ممکن است آلومینیوم یا مس باشد پر می‌شوند. این شیارها در ابتدا و انتهای روتور به هم متصل هستند. شکل کلی هادی‌ها و طرز قرار گرفتن آنها طرح قفس‌هایی که برای شکار سنجاب مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرد را القا می‌کند و نام این نوع روتورها را هم به همین ترتیب انتخاب کرده‌اند. برای کاهش جریان گردابی هسته این روتورها از آهن ورق ورق شده ساخته شده‌است.
با وصل موتور به برق،جریان الکتریکی که از میان سیم پیچ های خوابیده شده در شیار های استاتور عبور می کند تولید قطب های مشخص N و S می کند.
رفتار الکتریکی روتور تا حدودی متفاوت است.میدان مغناطیسی چرخان استاتور ولتاژی را در قفس سنجابی ایجاد می کند.این ولتاژ باعث می شود جریان الکتریکی در قفسه جاری شود که قطب های N و S یا میدان مغناطیسی را در روتور ایجاد کند.به واسطه ی واکنشی که بین میدان های استاتور و روتور برقرار می شود،گشتاور مکانیکی مشخصی در موتور ایجاد می شود.
وقتی که هادی های روتور به طور پیوسته خطوط شار مغناطیسی میدان استاتور را قطع می کنند،ولتاژ پیوسته ای در روتور القا خواهد شد.برای اینکه چنین پدیده ای واقع شود،لزوما بایستی روتور با سرعتی کمتر از سرعت سنکرون میدان چرخان استاتور بچرخد.تفاضل بین سرعت سنکرون و سرعت عملی موتور یا روتور به عنوان لغزش شناخته شده و معمولا به صورت درصدی از سرعت سنکرون معرفی می شود
