در ترجمهٔ بعضی جزوه‌ها، کتاب‌ها و رساله‌های الکترونیک دیود نورانی نیز نامیده شده است، یک قطعهٔ الکترونیک از خانوادهٔ دیودها است. ال‌ئی‌دی‌های تک رنگ همانند بقیه دیودها دارای دو پایهٔ آنُد و کاتُد هستند. ال‌ئی‌دی‌های دو رنگ (یا بیشتر) دارای یک پایهٔ مشترک (معمولاً کاتد، معروف به «کاتُد-مشترک») و به ازای هر رنگ یک پایهٔ دیگر (معمولاً آند) هستند.
طیف نور ال‌ئی‌دی شامل تمام طیف های مرئی و پرتوهای فرابنفش و مادون قرمز می‌شود. رنگ نور ال‌ئی‌دی‌ها بستگی به جنس کریستال تشکیل‌دهندهٔ آن‌ها دارد. مقدار و رنگ نور ال‌ئی‌دی‌ها تا حد زیادی به جریان آن‌ها نیز بستگی دارد.
با توجه به اینکه ال‌ئی‌دی‌ها می‌توانند نورهای رنگی مختلفی تولید کنند، در نورپردازی‌های تزئینی کاربرد دارند. و به همین سبب در موزه‌ها برای روشنایی اشیاء قیمتی به کار می‌روند. به علت توان مصرفی پایینشان می‌توان از آن‌ها در روشنایی اضطراری استفاده کرد ال‌ئی‌دی‌ها برای این منظور بسیار مناسبند. بسیاری از شرکت‌های معتبر خودروسازی، در چراغ راهنما، خطر و برخی چراغهای داخلی خودروهایشان از لامپ ال‌ئی‌دی استفاده می‌کنند
