میل غیرطبیعی و شدید به خوابیدن در طول روز را نارکولپسی گویند. این واژه یونانی است و از کلمه نارکو به معنی گیجی گرفته شده است. این نوع اختلال نوعی مشکل عصبی است که شامل مکانیزم خوابیدن بیدار شدن در مغز و غیرطبیعی بودن خواب REM (یا همان مرحله حرکت سریع چشم) است. نارکولپسی بیماری مزمن نورولوژیک است که به دلیل ناتوانی مغز در تنظیم چرخه خواب و بیداری به وجود می‌آید. در این بیماری، فرد در طول روز دچار حملات خواب می‌شود به شکلی که ناگهان به خواب میرود. زمان این به خواب رفتن میتواند خیلی کوتاه باشد، مثلا در زمان نوشتن یک متن برای مدت کوتاه به خواب رود و پس از برخاستن از خواب متوجه می‌شود که خطش عوض شده است. این بیماری میتواند با کاتالپسی و توهم همراه باشد. حمله خواب که نباید با صرع اشتباه شود، به یک معنا عکس بیخوابی است. کسی که حمله خواب دارد، ناگهان احساس خواب آلودگی غیرقابل کنترل می‌کند. این نوع نیاز به خواب تقریبا 15دقیقه طول می‌کشد. آنگاه شخص از خواب بیدار می‌شود و احساس می‌کند که استراحت کرده است. هر چند که حمله خواب تجدید قوا می‌دهد، ولی دوره بسیار خطرناک و ترسناکی است، زیرا به هنگام رانندگی و کار با اشیای برنده مثل مته و اره نیز پیش می‌آید.
