زبان پریشی ( آفازی ) اختلالی است که در اثر صدمه به بخش هایی از مغز که با زبان (language) در ارتباط هستند به وجود می آید. زبان پریشی منجر به مشکلاتی در صحبت کردن، گوش دادن، خواندن و نوشتن می شود.این مشکلات ممکن است در برخی یا همه ی زمینه های مذکور و به درجات مختلف دیده شود. به عنوان نمونه گزیده زیر را در نظر بگیرید:
قبل از ورود به خانه، من در یکی اینجا بود. خواهر من گروه در یکی دیگر بود.
ارتباط معنایی بین واژههای عبارت فوق بهشکلی جدی به هم خورده و علت آن نوعی آسیب مغزی است که در دانش معنایی فرد بیمار اختلال ایجاد کرده است.اما دانش واج شناسی سالم مانده است و لفظ فرد گرچه فاقد معنی است اما روان و با مکث و آهنگ مناسب ادا شده است.از نظر ساختار نحوی نیز مشکلی ندارد که این ویژگی خاص زبان پریشی ورنیکه است. اگر آسیب مغزی به بخشهایی از مغز وارد شود که با بیان و درک زبانی ارتباط دارند این آسیبها میتوانند منجر به زبانپریشی شوند. زبانپریشی الزاماً بر درجهٔ هوش فرد تأثیری ندارد.
