ریز شبکه یا میکرو گرید معمولاً شامل مجموعه‌ای از منابع تولید پراکنده، سیستم ذخیره انرژی و بارها می‌باشد که می‌تواند به صورت اتصال به شبکه و عملکرد جزیره‌ای مورد بهره‌برداری قرار گیرد، ریزشبکه دارای منافع زیادی هم برای مصرف کننده و هم برای شرکت‌های تولید برق خواهد داشت، از دید مصرف‌کننده ریزشبکه قابلیت فراهم ساختن همزمان برق و حرارت، افزایش قابلیت اطمینان، کاهش انتشار گازهای گل‌خانه‌ای، بهبود کیفیت توان و کاهش هزینه‌های مصرف را دارد و از دید شرکت‌های برق بکارگیری ریزشبکه‌ها پتانسیل کاهش دیماند مصرفی و بنابراین کاهش تسهیلات توسعه خطوط انتقال و علاوه بر آن عامل حذف نقاط اوج مصرف خواهد بود که در نتیجه از تلفات شبکه نیز کاسته می‌شود.
کاربرد ایزوله کردن (مستقل کردن از شبکه یا جزیره کردن ) بخشی از شبکه قدرت اولا، در افزایش قابلیت اطمینان مصرف کننده، ثانیاً در ایجاد امکان انجام عملیات تعمیر و نگه‌داری برنامه‌ریزی شده و ثالثاً در تامین توان مطمئن برای بارهای بحرانی است.بارها و منابع انرژی در یک ریز شبکه می‌توانند با حداقل قطع از شبکه‌ی سراسری منفصل شده و مجدداً به آن وصل شوند و بدین ترتیب منجر به افزایش قابلیت اطمینان در تامین بارهای ریز شبکه شوند.
منبع انرژی پراکنده می‌تواند تولید پراکنده (DG) ،ذخیره پراکنده (DS) و اغلب هر دو برای تامین انرژی در یک ریزشبکه به کار می‌روند. انتقال به مود جزیره می‌تواند ناشی از رخدادهای برنامه‌ریزی شده مانند تعمیرات شبکه بالا دست باشد که در این صورت زمان وقوع و دوره انفصال از شبکه مشخص است. اما در گذرهای غیر برنامه‌ریزی شده که به دلیل از دست رفتن شبکه سراسری هستند، زمانی شروع و طول دوره انفصال از شبکه معلوم نیست.
استراتژی‌های کنترل ریزشبکه
استراتژی‌های کنترلی، کنترلPQ و کنترلv/f هستند. هدف از کنترل PQ تحویل توان اکتیو و راکتیو ثابت به میکروگرید توسط DG ها می‌باشد.
کنترل PQ، مخصوصاً برای DG های خورشیدی و بادی به منظور اقتباس حداکثر انرژی قابل دسترس، مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرد.
