آرمانخواهی از دیرباز در زندگی انسانها وجود داشته است.اندیشمندان هر عصری، شهری را با شاخصه های خاص آن به عنوان آرمانشهر خود مطرح کرده اند که امروزه آن را در قالب اتوپیا یا مدینه فاضله میشناسیم. نخستین بار آرمانشهر اسلامی تحت عنوان مدینه فاضله توسط ابونصر محمد فارابی مطرح شد. وی در کتاب آرا اهل المدینه الفاضله، مدینه ی فاضله ی افلاطون را در ساختاری اسلامی عرضه کرده است.
این واژه نیز ترجمه ی واژه ی اتوپیا و چنین تعریف شده است: « آرمان های سیاسی و اجتماعی که تحقق عینی آن به واسطه ی آن که بر اساس واقعیت بنا نشده یا از طبیعت انسان و شرایط زندگی وی بیگانه است و سخت دست نیافتنی می نماید. »گفته شده که اوّلین بار شیخ اشراق، لفظ ناکجا آباد را برای جامعه ی آرمانی انتخاب و به کار برده است.
فضای معماری یک محیط مصنوع است که در دل تاریخ، جامعه و طبیعت سعی میکند بستر لازم برای دستیابی به انسانیتی برتر را برای انسان فراهم کند. انسانهایی که در همان هسته مرکزی طبیعت، جامعه یا تاریخ باقی ماندهاند ونتوانستهاند خود را به ساختهای فراتر از آن برسانند. این در حالی است که در تعالیم اسلامی، انسان کامل ضمن اینکه همه مراتب پایینتر از خود را شامل است، توانسته خود را به بالاترین درجه هستی یعنی تا مرز سدرهالمنتهی عالم وجودبرساند. مهمترین اثر معبود را باید در ویژگیهای آرمانی آن دانست؛ به همین جهت کمال انسانها در این است که مظهری از این معبود و ویژگیها و صفات او شوند.
