طراحی به معنای حقیقی در دنیای شبکه , راه و رسم , مدیریت و سازماندهی اجرای آن است . همانند نقشه ساختمان که بنا از روی آن ساخته می شود .

طراحی شبکه شامل 6 فاکتور است: 1- کارایی (کارایی در شبکه یک مفهوم نسبی است . بعضی ها کارایی را در قدرت پاسخ دهی یک نرم افزار . بعضی ها در انتقال اطلاعات با سرعت بالا و یا بعضی ها در سر پا ماندن شبکه و خارج از دسترس نبودن ان حتی برای یک ثانیه و ... می بینند . همه این تفکرات در نوع خود صحیح هستند اما نکته اینجاست که بستگی به تفکر کاربران شبکه طراحی و تجهیزات آن زمین تا سریا فاصله و تفاوت دارد . پس در درجه اول نیاز و افکار کاربران را بشناسید . ) 2- همزیستی مسالمت آمیز نرم افزارها 3- برگشت پذیری 4- مدیریت پذیری 5- امنیت 6- هزینه
نرم افزار ها حرف اول و آخر را در طراحی یک شبکه می زنند . اگر شما طرحی از شبکه را آماده کنید که از نظر علمی فوق العاده باشد , اما کاربران نتوانند با نرم افزار های خود سرعت را حس کنند , این طرح فاقد ارزش است.
