کیفیت یکی از مفاهیم محوری دانش و حرفه و طراحی معماری بوده و طبیعتاً از اهمیت نظری و عمل فراوانی برخوردار است. گذشته از اهمیت نظری، به واسطه بحران کیفیت که درحال حاضر بیشتر محیط های شهری در ایران با آن مواجه اند، مبحث کیفیت از نظر عملی نیز به یکی از پرسش های جدی بدل گردیده است. بسیاری از مسئولین، دانشگاهیان و طراحان معمار حرفه ای به شکل فزاینده ای نگرانی خود را در مورد نبود طراحی معماری واجد کیفیت مطلوب در کشور ابراز نموده اند؛ با این وجود، به واسطه ماهیت چند پهلو و فرار مفهوم کیفیت، اتفاق نظر قابل ملاحظه ای در دیدگاه های مطرح شده به چشم نمی خورد. چنین به نظر می رسد که برای ایجاد فهم مشترک از مقوله کیفیت طراحی معماری به روشنگری و بسط نظری این مفهوم نیاز است.
کیفیت طراحی معماری متشکل از سه مؤلفه به نام های کیفیت تجربی – زیبا شناختی، کیفیت عملکردی و کیفیت زیست محیطی است.
