هنر درمانی، تکنیک‌های روان درمانی را با فرایندهای خلاقانه در هم می‌آمیزد تا سلامت روانی و بهزیستی را بهبود بخشد. با وجودی که هزاران سال است که مردم از هنر به عنوان راهی برای بیان، ارتباط و بهبود یافتن استفاده می‌کنند امّا هنردرمانی به صورت رسمی از میانه‌های قرن بیستم شکل گرفته است. پزشکان دریافتند که افرادی که از بیماری‌های روانی رنج می‌برند غالباً خودشان را در نقاشی‌ها و سایر کارهای هنری بیان کرده‌اند و این باعث شد که به فکر استفاده از هنر به عنوان یک راهبرد بهبودبخشی بیفتند. از آن زمان، هنر بخش مهمی از حوزه روان‌درمانی شده است و در برخی از روش‌های سنجش و درمان به کار می‌رود. هدف از فعالیت‌های هنر درمانگرانه رشد هویت، شخصیت و نیزبرانگیختن احساس موفقیت درکودکان ازطریق ابزارهای ابتکاری خودمحور است. سایمون معتقد است که هنر در مانی یا روان در مانی هنری مستلزم توجه به نیازهای روانی بیماران، نظیر نیاز به آزادی، اظهار وجود و آرامش است وبر همین اساس نیازمند توجه به جزئیات مهارتهای هنری نیست و فعالیت‌ها و تولیدات هنری را نه به خاطر رویکرد زیبایی شناسانه آنها بلکه به دلیل نقش روانکاوانه و درمانگرشان مورد توجه قرار می‌دهد.
