یک اختلال سیالی بیانِ لفظی است که بر اساس تکرارها و تطویلهای غیر ارادی، صدادار یا بی صدا، به هنگام انتشار واحدهای کوچک سخن یعنی اصوات، هجاهای مجزا یا هجاهای کلمات مشخص می شود. لکنت زبان در میان پسران بیشتر از دختران است و در بررسی‌ها و تحقیقات مختلف نسبتی در حدود 70 درصد برای پسران و 30 درصد برای دختران ذکر گردیده است. بسیار دیده‌ایم که بعضیها به هنگام صحبت ، لکنت زبان دارند؛ یعنی زبانشان بر سر برخی از حروف گیر می‌کند. با چنین افرادی باید با ملایمت رفتار کرد. لکنت نمی‌تواند علت واحدی داشته باشد. بلکه همواره معلول علت بدنی ، عاطفی ، اجتماعی و یا ترکیب این عوامل است. بسیاری از افرادی که لکنت زبان دارند دچار بعضی از ناراحتیهای عصبی و ناسازگاری‌های اجتماعی هستند. اما تشخیص اینکه آیا اینگونه ناراحتیهای روانی علت لکنت زبان است و یا لکنت خود حاصل حالات و فشارهای ناشی از اختلالات روانی است، بسیار مشکل است.
