این اختلال، نوعی افسردگی است که در طول ماه‌های زمستان بروز می‌کند. شکل خفیف‌تری از اختلال عاطفی فصلی ( SAD )، با نام «افسردگی زمستان» شناخته می‌شود. نشانه‌های SAD از اواخر پائیز و هنگامی که مدّت روشنایی روز کمتر می‌شود (یا به اصطلاح، روزها کوتاهتر می‌شوند) بروز می‌کند و تا اواخر زمستان و اوایل بهار پابرجا می‌ماند. هنگامی که نور از طریق چشم‌ها عبور می‌کند و به مغز می‌رسد، سروتونین ( Serotonin ) آزاد می‌شود. در طول پاییز و زمستان، روشنایی روز کمتر از بهار و تابستان است و این امر باعث پائین آمدن سطح سروتونین در بدن می‌شود. افرادی که دچار این اختلال هستند، احساس افسردگی، تحریک‌پذیری و خستگی می‌کنند.
