رفتار نقش جنسیتی مربوط به (و تا حدودی) مشتق از هویت جنسی. این مفهوم را جان مانی با این کلمات توصیف کرد«هر آنچه یک فرد برای شناساندن خود به عنوان یک پسر یا یک مرد، و یا یک دختر یا یک زن می‌گوید یا می کند...نقش جنسی هنگام تولد بر قرار نمی گردد، بلکه به تدریج از طریق دستورات و تلقینات آشکار، و از طریق روی هم گذاشتن دو و دو برای بوجود آوردن چهار، و گاهی هم اشتباهأ پنج، بدست می آید." حاصل استاندارد و سالم، هماهنگی هویت جنسی و نقش جنسیتی است. هر چند صفات بیولوژیک حائز اهمیت است، عامل عمده در کسب نقش مناسب با جنس یادگیری است. نقش‌های جنسیتی شامل حالت‌ها، رفتار، اعمال و خصوصیات شخصیتی هستند که به یک جنسیت خاص در آن فرهنگ نسبت داده می‌شود. نقش‌های جنسیتی، فرهنگ محور هستند و درحالی‌که اکثر فرهنگ‌ها قائل به دو جنسیت (دختر / زن یا پسر / مرد) هستند، بعضی فرهنگ‌ها تعداد بیشتری جنسیت را به رسمیت می‌شناسند.
