انسان هر قدر وجدانش ضعیف باشد باز در برابر گناهانی که مرتکب شده، ظلم هایی که کرده، بی وفایی ها، پیمان شکنی ها، خیانت ها، دروغ ها و آلودگی های اخلاقی دیگر احساس شرمندگی می کند، احساس می کند. که از درون جانش می سوزد، همانند شخص مجرمی که مأموران انتظامی در به در دنبالش می گردند، احساس وحشت می کند. هرچه وجدانش قوی تر باشد، این احساس در او قوی تر خواهد بود.احساس گناه از نظر روان شناسان از مظاهر منفی تقدیر ذاتی به حساب می آید و احساسی بیمارگونه از ارتکاب گناه و خطاست که حتی ممکن است عمداً و یا باآگاهی مرتکب نشده باشد و یا اگر با اختیار آن را انجام داده باشد، می بایست فکر جبران و حل آن باشد، نه آن که احساس آن باعث رنج و درد او گردد.
از بارزترین اشکال احساس کمبود و گناه به معنای بیماری آن، ارزش یابی منفی از خود است و خود را به شدت سرزنش می کند. گاه می گوید: نباید این کار را می کردم، و یا باید کاری را که می کردم، ولی نکردم. گاه با صراحت می گوید: معلوم می شود که آدم بدی هستم، شیطان در وجودم رخنه کرده، بی شخصیت هستم، آدم بی ارزشی هستم و مانند این.
احساس گناه، به صورت بیمارگونه که در افراد ظاهر می شود، یکی از عوامل پژمردگی، افسردگی، اضطراب و نگرانی است که باید برای آن فکری کرد؛ وگرنه انسان ها دایم در رنج بوده و از درون می سوزند و از بیرون به صورت یک انسان افسرده و پژمرده در جامعه ظاهر می شوند واین نوع بیماری تازمانی که از ریشه برکنده نشود وعلل آن برطرف نشود، صرفاً با مراجعه به پزشک ومصرف داروهای مربوطه قابل علاج نخواهند بود.
