فرض کنید شرکتی تاسیس کرده اید و به دنبال موفقیت در یک بازار پررقابت اقتصادی هستید. برای موفقیت باید تلاش کنید تا هزینه ی شرکت خود را حداقل (یا کمینه یا مینیمم) و درآمد شرکت خود را حداکثر (یا بیشینه یا ماکزیمم) نمایید. طبیعتا هزینه ی شرکت شما وابسته به عواملی مانند تعداد پرسنل، میانگین حقوق پرنسل، هزینه ی مواد اولیه، هزینه اجاره ساختمان و انبار، هزینه ی آب و برق و گاز و تلفن، هزینه ی تبلیغات و مالیات وابسته است. همچنین درآمد شرکت شما به عواملی مانند تعداد محصولات فروخته شده و قیمت هر واحد فروخته شده دارد. شاید به نظر برسد که ساده ترین راه برای حداقل کردن هزینه ها اینست که تک تک عوامل موثر در هزینه ها را مینیمم کنیم مثلا حداقل تعداد پرسنل را استخدام کنیم و به پرسنل حداقل حقوق را پرداخت کنیم و یا برای حداکثر کردن درآمد، کیفیت محصولات را افزایش دهیم تا فروش افزایش یابد یا قیمت محصولات را بالا ببریم تا درآمد زیاد شود. اما قضیه به این سادگی نیست. بسیاری از این عوامل بر روی یکدیگر تاثیر دارند. مثلا حداقل کردن پرسنل مساویست با حجم کار بیشتر برای هر یک از کارکنان و این می تواند منجر به فشار کاری بیشتر، خستگی بیشتر و افت کیفت محصولات شود. کاهش درآمد هم می تواند انگیزه ی کارکنان و به طبع آن کیفیت محصولات را کاهش دهد و منجر به افت فروش شود. از طرف دیگر افزایش کیفیت اگرچه موجب رضایت مشتری و افزایش فروش خواهد شد اما از سوی دیگر قیمت محصولات را نیز بالاتر خواهد برد و مقدار فروش را کاهش خواهد داد. بهترین راه حل، مدل کردن کلیه عوامل موثر بر هزینه و درآمد به کمک فرمول های ریاضیست. در واقع اگر هر یک از عوامل موثر را به عنوان یک متغیر با دامنه ای مشخص در نظر بگیریم، هزینه و درآمد توابعی خواهند شد از این متغیرها. همچنین فراموش نمی کنیم که متغیرها نیز ممکن است با هم در ارتباط باشند و بر یکدیگر تاثیر گذار باشند، در نتیجه این ارتباطات و تاثیرات را نیز توسط فرمول های ریاضی مدل می کنیم و نهایتا به یک مدل جامع و کامل دست خواهیم یافت. هدف نهایی حداکثر کردن تابع درآمد و حداقل کردن تابع هزینه با توجه به قیود و محدودیت های مشخص است. حتی می توان دو تابع درآمد و هزینه را در قالب تابع سود ترکیب کرد و هدف را حداکثر کردن تابع سود (تابع درآمد منهای تابع هزینه) تعریف کرد. شاخه ای از ریاضی که به حل چنین مسائلی می پردازد بهینه سازی نام دارد. در روش های بهینه سازی عددی، جواب اولیه ای درنظر گرفته می شود (با حدس یا تخمین) و این جواب اولیه با استفاده از تکنیک های تکرار شونده بهتر و بهتر می شود تا به حد مطلوب برسد.
