تصمیم‌گیری یکی از مهمترین و اساسی‌ترین وظایف مدیریت است و تحقق اهداف سازمانی به کیفیت آن بستگی دارد. به طوری که از نگاه یکی از صاحبنظران حوزه تصمیم‌گیری هربرت سایمون، تصمیم‌گیری جوهر اصلی مدیریت است. یکی از تکنیک‌های تصمیم‌گیری با استفاده از داده‌های کمی تصمیم‌گیری چندمعیاره می‌باشد. مدیر با استفاده از تکنیک‌های تصمیم‌گیری چندمعیاره می‌تواند با در نظر گرفتن معیارهای متفاوت برای تصمیم‌گیری که گاهاً با یکدیگر در تعارض هستند، به طریقی عقلایی تصمیم سازی نماید. تصمیم‌گیری چندمعیاره (MCDM) به دو دسته تصمیم‌گیری چندشاخصه (MADM) و تصمیم‌گیری چندهدفه (MODM) تقسیم می‌شود. مدل‌ها و تکنیک‌های تصمیم‌گیری چند شاخصه به منظور انتخاب مناسب ترین گزینه از بین m گزینه موجود بکار می‌روند. در MADM معمولا داده‌های مربوط به گزینه‌ها از منظر شاخص‌های مختلف در یک ماتریس نمایش داده می‌شود. مدل‌های تصمیم‌گیری چندشاخصه از نظر نوع شاخص‌های مورد نظر به مدل‌های جبرانی و غیرجبرانی تقسیم می‌شوند.
