سیستم عبارت است از وسائل و امکاناتی که اطلاعات و داده ها را پردازش و محصولی را به عنوان خروجی از سوی دیگر خارج می کند . سیستم حسابداری نیز طرز کاری این چنین دارد . یعنی اطلاعات مالی موجود در یک موسسه را گردآوری و اطلاعات مورد نیاز را برای تصمیم گیریهای مختلف فراهم می سازد. در واقع این سیستم حسابداری مجموعه ای شامل کارکنان ، انواع فرمها ، دفاتر ، روشها و وسائل و تجهیزات پردازش است که با ثبت طبقه بندی و تلخیص معاملات و عملیات مالی و کنترل داراییها ، بدهیها ، سرمایه ، درآمدها و هزینه ها بر طبق اصول ، رویه ها ، دستورالعملهای مدون ، ااطلاعات مورد نیاز را برای تصمیم گیریهای آگاهانه استفاده کنندگان از اطلاعات مالی یک موسسه فراهم می آورد. امروزه یک موسسه را ( هر چند کوچک ) بدون استقرار یک سیستم حسابداری کارآمد نمی توان به درستی اداره کرد . موسساتی که در جوامع مختلف وجود دارند از لحاظ شکل و اندازه متفاوتند و معاملات و عملیات مالی و فعالیت های گوناگونی را در روال عادی کار خود انجام می دهند. آنچه که در تمام سیستمهای حسابداری با هر نوع سازمان و وسایل و تجهیزات پردازش در سیستم عامل رویدادهای مالی مشترک است ، اصول متداول حسابداری استاندارد های حسابداری ) است که در تمام آنها به یک مفهوم و به طور یکنواخت به عنوان دستورالعمل شناسایی ، پردازش در سیستم عامل رویدادهای مالی و تهیه گزارشهاو صورتهای مالی به کار گرفته می شود.
