Cummings and colleagues (1994) have suggested that children’s emotional arousability and regulatory abilities may be best explained within an “emotional security model.” They argue that an early stressful familial climate marked by high rates of interparental conflict influences children’s sense of emotional security adversely, and in turn, their abilities to regulate emotional and behavioral response to stressors. Additionally, they suggest that child characteristics (e.g., infant negative emotionality) and parenting may interact with parental conflict to explain poor emotion regulation in young children. However, longitudinal studies testing these relationships have yet to be examined. In the present study, the effects of infant negative emotionality, marital relations, and parenting on emotional reactivity at 42 months will be evaluated.
