Feeding, sleeping and crying problems are most common during the infant’s first 6 months of life. Disorganized sucking patterns have been reported in infants with colic. Excessive crying and night waking are known to piace great strain on the parent-chiki relationship and famiiy life. As lo-15% of the mothelrr become depressed postpartum, the question about the role maternal depression plays in the development of feeding, sleeping and crying problems in infants remains controversial. Whereas ciinical vignettes and clinical studies often point to maternal depression as a co-morbid symptom when infants have feeding and sleeping problems or are crying excessiveiy, research on the association between maternal depression and these infant difficulties remain nonconclusive. The present paper attempts to further explore the association between maternal depression and problems with feeding, sleeping and crying in infants, with the hypothesis that maternal depression will influence feeding, sleeping and crying patterns in their 2 months oid infants.
