حافظهء حسی یعنی، نگهداری موقت اطلاعات در اندام های حسی. تمام حواس فیزیولوژیکی انسان دارای حافظه است. «حافظه حسی» نخستین مرحله به یاد‌سپاری و ذخیره کردن اطلاعات است. در این حافظه نسخه دقیقی از«اطلاعات حسی» ذخیره می‌شود. گنجایش این حافظه نامحدود است، اما مدت زمان ذخیره‌سازی اطلاعات بسیار کوتاه (حدود یک ثانیه) است. بعد از آنکه محرکی (از طریق گیرنده‌های حسی) وارد حافظه حسی شد، اگر مورد «توجه» (Attention) و دقت قرار گیرد، اطلاعات آن محرک به حافظه «کوتاه مدت» انتقال می‌یابد. این فرآیند دقت و توجه برای انتقال اطلاعات با حافظه کوتاه مدت بسیار مهم است، زیرا آدمی در هر لحظه تحت تاثیر محرکهای حسی فراوانی قرار دارد، که اگر قرار بود این محرکها «ادراک» (Perception) شوند، زندگی غیر ممکن می‌شد. آدمی از طریق توجه کردن به بعضی از امور (محرکها) و بی‌توجهی به بعضی دیگر تصمیم می‌گیرد، تا آنچه را که می‌خواهد، ادراک کند. این فرآیند برای آغاز یادگیری مهم است.
