هیجان خواهی شخصیتی است که افراد به میزان متفاوتی از آن برخودارند. برخی بسیار هیجان طلبند و برخی بسیار کم و تعدادی در میان این دو گروه قرار می گیرند. افراد هیجان خواه برای به دست آوردن سطح برانگیختگی بهینه دست به کارهای مختلفی می زنند. آن ها با افراد مختلفی معاشرت می کنند، نه به دلیل این که بر دیگران تأثیر بگذارند، بلکه به دنبال تحریک هستند. این پدیده یک صفت ارثی است که با نیاز به احساس ها و تجربه های متنوع، بدیع و پیچیده و میل به خطرجویی جسمانی و اجتماعی به خاطر چنین تجربه هایی تعریف می شود. افراد هیجان خواه افرادی هستند که دارای خصوصیاتی همچون برونگرایی، خود مختاری، جسور و ناهماهنگ می باشند. در نگرشهای مذهبی و سیاسی بیشتر تمایل به آزاد اندیشی دارند، در برابر موفقیت های مبهم تحمل بیشتری دارند. در نگرشهای جنسی آنان از سلطه جویی ضعیف تری برخوردارند و پاسخهای فیزیولوژیکی آنان به محرکهای جدید شدیدتر از گروههای دیگر است.
