تهاتر یا مبادله کالا به کالا، قدیمی ترین شکل انجام معاملات در جهان به شمار می رود. بازار تهاتر، بازاری است که معاملات در آن براساس مبادله مستقیم کالا یا خدمات یکطرف تجاری با کالا و خدمات طرف دیگر بدون دخالت پول صورت می گیرد. در تهاتر سنتی، به دلیل محدود بودن کالا و خدمات و تطابق زیاد نیازها و تولیدات دو طرف، معاملات کاملا به صورت مستقیم و پایاپای انجام می شد ولی امروزه به علت تنوع و گستردگی نیازها و تولیدات امکان تبادل مستقیم بین دو طرف بسیار کمتر است، لذا در بازارهای تهاتری نوین بایستی یک وسیله مبادله اعتباری مانند سند یا کارت اعتباری تعریف نمود تا با مبادله آن میان اعضا چرخه تهاتری به صورت کاملا شفاف و روان انجام پذیرد و بدین ترتیب کسی که سند مبادله و یا کارت اعتباری در اختیار داشته باشد می تواند با خرید کالا و یا خدمات موردنیاز خود در بازار تهاتری آن اعتبار را هزینه کند و عرضه کنندگانی که کالا یا خدمات خود را دراین بازار در قبال دریافت آن سند اعتباری می فروشند می توانند دوباره در همین بازار ملزومات خود را با کمترین نیاز به گردش نقدینگی تهیه کنند.
