امروزه با توجه به پیچیده شدن ارتباط شرکتهای موجود در جامعه با یکدیگر و همچنین با دولت و افراد حاضر در جامعه شرایطی بوجود آمد که شرکتها می بایست نه تنها به ذینفعان بلکه به آحاد مردم پاسخگو باشند. از دهه 60 میلادی شرکتها به اهمیت منابع اجتماعی پی برده اند بگونه ای که این اهمیت خود را در یک دهه بعد در گزارشگری اجتماعی نشان داد. دهه 70 شروع و اوج دوران حسابداری و گزارشگری اجتماعی به شمار می آید. حسابداری اجتماعی عبارتست از فرآیند گردآوری، اندازه گیری و گزارش معاملات و تاثیرات متقابل این معاملات بین واحدهای تجاری و جامعه پیرامونی او. حسابداری اجتماعی از طریق اندازه گیری و گزارشکری تاثیرات متقابل واحد تجاری و جامعه پیرامونی اش، ارزیابی از توان ایفا تعهدات اجتماعی را امکان پذیر می سازد. حسابداری اجتماعی شامل، عملیات و انتشارات حسابهایی درباره اقدامات متقابل اجتماع، محیط، کارمند، جامعه، مشتری و سایر ذینفعان سازمان و تا جایی که امکان دارد نتیجه این اقدامات و فعالیتها است. تمرکز اصلی حسابداری اجتماعی بر اندازه گیری و گزارشگری تاثیرات تجارت شرکت بر اجتماع و محیط فیزیکی است. حسابداری اجتماعی به اندازه گیری (واحد های پولی و غیر پولی) تاثیرات مطلوب و نامطلوب فعالیتها اشاره دارد. حسابداری اجتماعی به نظر می رسد که شامل اندازه گیری منفعت – هزینه و گزارشگری برنامه های اجتماعی و فعالیتهای عمومی شرکت باشد.
