مراد از استهلاک، به اختصاصی ترین معنای آن، ارزش کاهش یافته و عمر کوتاه شده ی کالاهای سرمایه ای است که از فرسایش ناشی می شود. در معنای گسترده تر، ممکن است اشاره باشد به ارزش کاهش یافته و عمر کوتاه شده ی هر کالای سرمایه ای یا دارایی که در طول دوره ی قابل توجهی از زمان منشاء خدماتی قرار گرفته است.می توان میان استهلاک ناشی از علل طبیعی و استهلاک ناشی از علل کارکردی فرق گذارد. هزینه استهلاک به عنوان با اهمیت ترین هزینه مرتبط با اموال ، ماشین آلات و تجهیزات تلقی می گردد. در این ارتباط از روش شناسایی سیستماتیک و منطقی جهت شناسایی هزینه استهلاک مرتبط با هر دارایی استفاده می نماییم. استهلاک محاسبه شده در هر دوره به حسابی با عنوان استهلاک انباشته منظور می گردد. این حساب ، حسابی کاهنده است و در سمت راست ترازنامه به عنوان کاهنده بهای تمام شده دارایی نمایش داده می شود. تفاوت بهای تمام شده و استهلاک انباشته دارایی برابر است با ارزش دفتری دارایی.
