Gender identity is not given, but a construction, a belief. The child experiences his or her body, but he has to learn from his/her parents or environment, who he or she is: a boy or a girl; he or she is handled differently according to his/her sex. The biological components of the sex are sometimes incomplete or mixed; a decision should be taken about the sex of assignment in a very few cases. We used to speak in terms of intersexuation, hermaphroditism, and pseudo-hermaphroditism, but now a new designation has appeared “Disorders of Sex Development”. The follow-up study of those children has given rise to the notion of gender, which is psychosocial, as different from sex, which is biological. The notion of gender made a fortune, but is now under question. Other children without any sign of intersex condition refuse their biological sex. Some of them will become transsexuals and ask a hormonal and surgical transformation of their body. All those, who have a « variation » in their body, identity or sexual orientation fear to be stigmatized and want to overcome the secrecy and shame that weight heavily on their lives. They sometimes think that it needs the suppression of binary sexes/genders.
