سیستم اطلاعات مدیریت گونه ای از سیستم های اطلاعاتی رایانه ای است که می تواند اطلاعات را از منابع مختلفی در موسسه برای تصمیم گیری در رده مدیریتی جمع آوری و پردازش کند. کنترل مدیریتی نیازمند اطلاعاتی است که بخشی از آن توسط سیستم های پردازشِ مبادلات تولید می شوند. سیستم های اطلاعاتی پشتیبان کنترل مدیریتی، اطلاعات تولید شده توسط سیستم های پردازش مبادلات را پردازش کرده و آنها را در شکل جدیدِ معنی داری به مدیر ارائه می کنند. چنین سیستم های اطلاعات ی، سیستم های اطلاعات مدیریتی نامیده می شوند. سیستم اطلاعات مدیریت سیستمی است یکپارچه که از کاربر و ماشین برای ارائه اطلاعات در پشتیبانی از عملیات، مدیریت و تصمیم گیری در سازمان تشکیل شده است. این سیستم از نرم افزار و سخت افزار رایانه ای، راهنماها و دستورالعمل ها، مدل هایی برای تحلیل، برنامه ریزی، کنترل و تصمیم گیری و یک پایگاه اطلاعات بهره می گیرد . سیستم اطلاعات مدیریت سیستمی یکپارچه، رایانه ای و کاربر- ماشینی است که اطلاعات لازم برای حمایت از عملیات و تصمیم گیری را فراهم می کند.اجزاء اصلی این سیستم عبارت اند از: (۱) سیستمی یکپارچه برای خدمت به تعداد زیادی کاربر، (۲) سیستمی رایانه ای که تعدادی نرم افزار اطلاعاتی را از طریق یک پایگاه اطلاعات به هم ربط داده (۳) رابط کاربر- ماشین که به جستجوهای فوری و موقتی پاسخ داده (۴) ارائه اطلاعات به تمام سطوح مدیریتی و (۵) پشتیبانی از عملیات و تصمیم گیری.
