آینده‌نگری یک جهت‌گیری شناختی (عقلی) به آینده شخصی است؛ نوعی استدلال عملی و کنترل کردن خود است که به افراد در جهت رسیدن به اهداف دوردست‌شان (یعنی اهداف بلندمدت‌شان) کمک‌های مؤثری می‌کند. افراد آینده‌نگر، به طور حساب شده و دوراندیشانه به عواقب تصمیمات و اعمالشان توجه می‌کنند، به گونه‌ای موفقیت‌آمیز در برابر هوس‌ها و تکانه‌های آنی و دیگر تصمیم‌های لحظه‌ای و بدون فکر و اندیشه مقاومت می‌کنند، در زندگی انعطاف‌پذیری و اعتدال را پیشه خود می‌سازند و تلاش می‌کنند تا بین امیال و آرزوهای‌شان و آنچه در پایان نصیب‌شان می‌شود (یعنی بعد از یک عمل یا انجام یک کار) نوعی تعادل و توازن برقرار سازند. آینده نگری یا پیش بینی کمی مفعولانه به نظر می رسد و بیشتر در پی کشف و پیش بینی آینده و دیدن آنچه در آینده رخ خواهد داد می باشد.و این گونه در آینده پژوهی معاصر از آن یاد می شود. آینده‌نگری در پیش گرفتن یک جهت‌گیری عملی نسبت به اهداف آتی است و نوعی دقت و تیزبینی در مورد انتخاب‌ها و تصمیم‌گیری‌ها، بی‌ملاحظه نبودن درباره خطرها و در هنگام تصمیم‌گیری‌های کوتاه‌مدت چشم داشتن به تصمیم‌های درازمدت و متعالی‌تر است.
