با توجه به نیاز روز افزون به منابع انرژی و کاهش منابع سوخت فسیلی ضرورت سالم نگهداشتن محیط زیست، کاهش آلودگی هوا، محدودیتهای برق رسانی و تامین سوخت برای نقاط روستایی دور افتاده و... استفاده از انرژیهای نو مانند، انرژی آب انرژی باد، انرژی خورشید، انرژی هیدروترمال، و... می‌تواند جایگاه ویژه‌ای داشته باشد.مدیریت مصرف یکی از مباحث مهم و استراتژیک به منظور دستیابی به تعالی و توسعه اقتصادی کشورهاست چرا که پس از طی عصر کشاورزی با هدف تأمین غذا و ورود به عصر صنعتی با هدف تأمین ابزار و ماشین، هرچند گذر از دوره محصول گرایی با تفکر رشد اقتصادی در اواخر قرن نوزدهم همراه بود ولی به مرور زمان و با گذر از دوره بازارگرایی در نیمه اول قرن بیستم و ورود به عصر فراصنعتی و پیدایش رقابت شدید در محیط پویای تهدیدآمیز، باعث گرایش به سمت بهره وری و متعاقباً تلاشی مفید برای برخورداری از بهره وری در کنار رشد اقتصادی با هم افزایی به اصطلاح «در حال توسعه» گردید و مدیریت مصرف را به سوی وضعیت «توسعه یافته» هدایت نمود، بطوریکه توجه خاص به مدیریت مصرف با مفهوم مدیریت توسعه در عصر اطلاعات و کاربردی نمودن استراتژی با استفاده از مدیریت دانش، امری کارا و مؤثر تلقی گردید و متعاقباً مدیریت مصرف در انرژی نیز با کمک این نوع مدیریت ، یقیناً توان پیاده سازی و عملیاتی شدن را از خود نشان خواهد داد.
