فرآیند تحلیل سلسله مراتبی (AHP) روشی است منعطف، قوی و ساده که برای تصمیم گیری در شرایطی که معیارهای تصمیم گیری متضاد انتخاب بین گزینه ها را با مشکل مواجه می سازد، مورد استفاده قرار می گیرد. این روش ارزیابی چند معیاری، ابتدا در سال 1980 به وسیله توماس ال ساعتی پیشنهاد گردید و تاکنون کاربردهای متعددی در علوم مختلف داشته است. معنی فرایند واکاوی سلسله مراتبی است. انتخاب معیارها یا criterions بخش اول تجزیه و تحلیل AHP است. سپس براساس معیارهای شناسائی شده کاندیداها ارزیابی می‌شوند. مقایسه زوجی معیارهای مختلف با توجه به هدف و تعیین وزن نسبی این معیارها
گام سوم: جمع آوری داده در ارتباط با تمامی معیارها به تفکیک هر یک از گزینه ها
گام چهارم: مقایسه زوجی گزینه های مختلف به تفکیک هر یک از معیارها و تعیین وزن نسبی گزینه ها به تفکیک هر یک از معیارها
گام پنجم: تحلیل نتایج، تعیین وزن نهایی هر یک از گزینه ها و تعیین اولویت هر یک از آن ها یکی از مهمترین کاربردهای تصمیم‌گیری چندمعیاره، کاربرد آنها در تصمیم‌گیری گروهی است.
اصول فرآیند تحلیل سلسله مراتبی
• شرط معکوسی (Reciprocal Condition)
اگرترجیح عنصر A بر عنصر B برابر n باشد ترجیح عنصر B بر عنصر A برابر n/1خواهد بود .
• اصل همگنی (Homogeneity)
عنصر A با عنصر B باید همگن و قابل قیاس باشند . به بیان دیگر برتری عنصر A بر عنصر B نمی تواند بی نهایت یا صفر باشد.
• وابستگی (Dependency)
هر عنصر سلسله مراتبی به عنصر سطح بالاتر خود می تواند وابسته باشد وبه صورت خطی این وابستگی تا بالاترین سطح می تواند ادامه داشته باشد.
• انتظارات (Expectation)
هر گاه تغییر در ساختمان سلسله مراتبی رخ دهد پروسه ارزیابی باید مجددا انجام گیرد.
