آینده پژوهی رشته ای چند وجهی قلمداد می شود که مشتمل بر حوز ههای مختلف است و طیف وسیعی از دیدگاه های پیرامون آیندۀ محتمل و مرجع را در برمی گیرد. مک هال و مک هال 1975 ) ) در تحقیق بین المللی خود از چند آینده پروژه، بیشتر از 17 رهیافت روش شناختی را تبیین می کنند که در تلفیق با یکدیگر به کار گرفته می شوند. یکی از این فنون، دلفی نام دارد که از آن با نام های (Delphi Technique) فنّ دلفی ،(Delphi Study) مطالعة دلفی (Delphi Method) روش دلفی نیز نام می برند این روش یا فن، که به حوزة روش های پیش بینی مکاشفة ذهنی یا شهودی تعلق دارد، در دهة 1950 توسط نور من دالْکی،اُلاف هِلمر و تی. جی . جی. گوردون در شرکت راند(RAND) در سانتامونیکای کالیفرنیا، برای مطالعه و بررسی مسائل نظامی آینده شکل گرفت، ولی یک دهه بعد، برای پیش بینی های فنّاورانه د رمقیاس های بزرگ و نیزبرنامه ریزی گروهی و مشترک به کار گرفته شد. یک مطالعه ی دلفی شامل جمع آوری نظرات کارشناسان در دفعات متعدد به وسیله ی تکرار چند دور ارسال پرسشنامه می باشد. در واقع این پرسشنامه وسیله ای است برای ارتباط بین کارشناسان و تأثیر گذاشتن آنها بر یکدیگر.
