کاریزما در لغت یعنی فرهمند یا فرمندی یا به عبارتی جاذبه استثنایی. شخصیت و جذابیت یک فرد که می تواند در مردم نفوذ کند و آنان را به شور و فداکاری وادار سازد. کاریزماتیک کلمه ای یونانی به معنای موهبت می باشد. وحی،حکم، تعلیم، کشیش، عقل و شفا دادن از موهبت های پر جذبه هستند که در کتاب مقدس مسیحیان توصیف شد ه اند . کاریزما در اصطلاح به خصوصیت شخصی گفته می شود که خود او معتقد است، یا دیگران در مورد او بر این باورند که دارای قدرت رهبری فوق العاده می باشد.رهبری کاریزماتیک یا رهبری مبتنی بر جاذبه استثنایی، به گونه ای از رهبری گفته می شود که دارای قدرت و توانایی الهام بخشی به پیروان باشد و این در حالی است که توانایی ها صرفاً از نیروی شخصیت و تعهد فرد سرچشمه گرفته باشد. در این نوع رهبری، رابطه ای بدون استفاده از پاداش های مالی و اعمال زور برقرار می شود. انسان‌ها، روابط متعددی با یکدیگر برقرار می‌کنند (دوستی، خویشاوندی) که رهبری نیز یکی از آنهاست. رهبری کاریزماتیک، نوعی سبک رهبری است که به برقراری چنین رابطه‌ای بدون اعمال زور یا پاداش‌های مالی منجر می‌شود. این نوع رهبری از سوی نظریه‌پردازان سازمانی، مورد کم توجهی قرار گرفته است. این مشکل تا اندازهای به فقدان چارچوب فکری سیستماتیک نسبت داده می‌شود. یعنی برقراری رابطه‌ای که اثرپذیری و اثرگذاری در آن بدون اعمال زور یا پاداش‌های مالی صورت می‌گیرد.این مشکل تا حدی به فقدان یک چارچوب فکری منظم نسبت داده می‌شود. رهبری کاریزماتیک، خصوصیتی نیست که به صورت ذاتی در تمامی افراد وجود داشته باشد و یا به بیانی دیگر، تمامی انسان‌ها واجد این قابلیت باشند. خصوصیت کاریزماتیک، همیشه همراه فرد نیست و همگان نمی‌توانند فردی را به عنوان رهبر کاریزماتیک بپذیرند. در مرحله اول، عواملی وجود دارند که باعث ایجاد و ظهور کاریزما می‌شوند. در مرحله بعد، عواملی وجود دارند که در ثبات، شدت و ضعف صفت کاریزما در رهبر مؤثر هستند. نکته مهم این است که کاریزماتیک بودن، خصوصیتی است که در واقع از سوی پیروان به رهبران اعطا می‌شود. کاریزما بودن خصیصه‌ای است که به رفتارهای مشاهده شده از رهبر بستگی دارد
