سازمان های سنتی عملیات خود را در قالب واحدهای مشخص و واحدهای تجاری انجام می دهند. سازمان های مجازی عملیات خود را فراتر از زمان، مکان، فرهنگ ومرزهای سازمان انجام می دهند. بنابراین سازمان های مجازی اغلب به عنوان گسترش فعالیت های داخلی با ایجاد ارتباط خارج از مرز سازمان تعریف شده که با بهره گیری از تیم های مجازی بسته به نیاز سازمان شکل گرفته و یا خاتمه می یابد که نتیجه آن ایجاد یک سازمان بدون مرز که به عنوان یک « شبکه متحداز کارکنان» بدون توجه به مکان وزمان و مالک آن به نحو مطلوب به فعالیت کاری می پردازند. مزایای ایجاد اینگونه سازمان ها بطور کلی وفق پذیری بیشتر، کوتاهتر شدن زمان پاسخگویی، تخصصی تر شدن وظیفه ومعایت آن افزایش مناقشات ، کاهش وفاداری و ریسک پذیری بیشتر است.همه کارکنان و اعضای سازمان مسئولیت مرز گستری سازمان را بر عهده می گیرند و نقش اطلاعاتی ، حراستی یا رابطه با محیط خارج از سازمان را ایفا می کنند.دایره یا کسی که وظیفه یا نقش مرزگستری سازمان را بر عهده دارد می کوشد تا بین سازمان و عوامل اصلی محیط خارجی رابطه موزون و هماهنگ برقرار نماید . وظیفه مرز گستر معمولاً شامل مبادله اطلاعات است تا بتواند:
1-از اطلاعات مربوط به تغییرات محیط اگاهی یابد و انها را به درون سازمان بیاورد
2- اطلاعات را به محیطی بدهد که با سازمان نظم موافق و مساعد دارد . نقش های مرز گستری:آنها سازمان را با عناصر کلیدی در محیط بنگاه متصل نموده و هماهنگ می کنند افرادی که نقش های مرز گستری بر عهده می گیرند بنگاه را آماده عملیات و به رمز نگه میدارد و باعث میشود مدیریت ارشد از تحولات محیطی آگاه و مطلع گرددۀاغلب هر قدر عدم اطمینان محیطی افزایش پیدا می کند اهمیت واحدهای مرز گستری هم بیشتر می شود
