اصطلاح Déconstruction را فیلسوف معاصر فرانسه ژاک دریدا با مفهومی نه چندان صریح برساخت. این اصطلاح از قبل در زبان فرانسه بوده‌است و دریدا بسط و کاربردهای متفاوت‌تری برای آن ایجاد کرده که در بخش‌های دیگر این نوشته به مفهوم این اصطلاح و کارکرد زبانی-فلسفی آن اشاره خواهد شد. اصطلاح شالوده شکنی در تصور عموم معانی بسیاری دارد؛ اما معنی اش در فلسفه عبارت است از راهبردهای خاصی برای خواندن و نوشتن متن ها. براساس نظر پست مدرنیسم، از طریق شالوده شکنی برهان و معکوس کردن پیش فرضهای بنیادین آن، می توان فضا را برای پیش فرضهایی که قبلاً مورد توجه قرار نگرفته اند، باز کرد. به عنوان مثال نظریه‌های مدرنیسم سازمان فرض می کنند که عدم اطمینان محیطی نامطلوب و ناخوشایند است، بنابراین تصمیم گیرندگان سازمان برای کاهش عدم اطمینان محیطی سعی می کنند که در ساختارهای خود تغییراتی ایجاد کنند و خود را با محیط وفق دهند تا بقا یابند. پست مدرنیست ها شالوده‌های این پیش فرض را می‌شکنند و فرض می کنند که عدم اطمینان محیطی به جای اینکه نامطلوب و ناخوشایند باشد، پدیده ای جذاب و خوشایند است. در نتیجه این شالوده شکنی، مرزهای بین سازمان و محیط زیر سوال می رود و به دنبال آن در ساختارهای سازمانی تغییرات اساسی ایجاد می شود و ساختارهای سازمانی از جمله سازمانهای شبکه ای، مجازی، بدون مرز و ساختار، شکل می‌گیرند. شیوه پست مدرنیسم، ابزاری برای غلبه بر تحکم یک نگاه یا ایده است و از دانش برای رهایی به جای کنترل استفاده می کند. پست مدرنیست ها بر گفتمان عمومی، به عنوان روشی برای مطرح شدن پیش فرضهای جدید، تاکید می کنند. در گفتمان، یک گروه موضوعات بحث انگیز پیچیده‌ای را از منظرهای گوناگون می شکافد. افراد نسبت به پیش فرضهای خود مردد می‌شوند، اما پیش فرضهای خود را آزادانه ابلاغ می کنند. در گفتمان، افراد مشاهده‌گران اندیشه خود می‌شوند. بنابراین یک ایده برای خلق نوآوری و ایجاد تغییر و تحول، استفاده از گفتمان است. گفتمان فرصتهای بیشتری را برای سازماندهی و در نتیجه سازماندهی مجدد (تغییر) فراهم می آورد.
