مهندسی صنایع، (به انگلیسی: Industrial engineering) عنوانی قدیمی برای بیان رویکردی در علم مدیریت سازمان ها و صنایع می‌باشد . نام فارسی این رشته به عنوان معادل درست انگلیسی آن عبارت از مهندسی صنعتی است که توسط تیلور بانی علم مدیریت به کار برده شد . مجموعه فعالیت هایی که مهندسی صنعتی نامیده می شود در ماهیت جزو زیر شاخه های علم مدیریت قرار می گیرند مانند مدیریت کیفیت ، مدیریت بهره وری ، مدیریت پروژه ، مدیریت تولید و ... از این رو امروزه مباحث مهندسی صنایع زیر مجموعه علم مدیریت قرار می گیرد و واژه ی مهندسی ، بیشتر جنبه اسمی و تاریخی دارد . آن بخش از مباحث با عنوان مهندسی صنایع که جنبه های آماری و ریاضیاتی دارد نیز امروزه تحت عنوان رشته های آمار صنعتی و ریاضیات کاربردی و ریاضیات صنعتی قرار می گیرد. امروزه در دانشگاههای کشورهای پیشرفته رشته عامی با عنوان مهندسی صنایع غالباً" به رشته های تخصصی مدیریتی مربوطه مانند مدیریت کیفیت ، مدیریت تولید، مدیریت پروژه و غیره تبدیل شده اند واین روال ادامه دارد. تعاریفی که از مهندسی صنایع ارائه می شود مانند اینکه رشته‌ای است که با طراحی، بهبود، و پیاده سازی سیستمای یکپارچه از افراد، مواد، اطلاعات، تجهیزات و انرژی مرتبط می‌باشد ، بیانی از علم مدیریت می باشد. مهندسی صنایع آن‌گونه که در ایران تدریس می‌شود در واقع مهندسی صنایع کلاسیک است که مبتنی بر بهینه سازی، بهینه سازی خطی (تحقیق در عملیات) و کارسنجی و زمانسنجی می‌باشد.
