نگهداری و تعمیرات یک اقدام بحرانی و سریع برای تعمیر دستگاه‌ها نیست؛ اگر چه سرعت بالا در اجرای فعالیت‌های نگهداری و تعمیرات یکی از شاخص‌های مهم در این زمینه‌است. نگهداری و تعمیرات یک هنر است؛ چرا که پیش از وقوع یک مشکل و همچنین در هنگام وقوع آن، توانایی انتخاب رویکردها و فعالیت‌های مختلف وجود دارد. با افزایش روزافزون اتوماسیون مساله شکست و از کارافتادگی ماشین‌آلات نیز از اهمیت بیشتری برخوردار می‌گشت ؛ پس از گذشت چندی روند افزایش خرابیها به گونه‌ای گردید که کمیت و کیفیت تولیدات را تحت‌الشعاع خود قرار داده و اسباب نارضایتی صاحبان صنایع را فراهم نمود . ادامه این روند ناخوشایند ، مدیران و کارشناسان را به فکر چاره و راه‌حلی مناسب برای جلوگیری از روند رو به رشد عیوب نمود. در این رهگذر سیستم نگهداری و تعمیرات پیشگیرانه (Preventive Maintenance) بعنوان چاره درد و راه‌حلی مناسب در کشور امریکا پیشنهاد گردید و به اجرا درآمد . نیاز صنایع بر تولید محصولات با کیفیت بالا و قیمت مناسب جهت افزایش توانایی رقابت در بازار موجب گردید که استفاده از سیستم PM رونق یافته و در این راستا اجرای تعمیرات و تعویضهای پیشگیرانه دوره‌ای بعنوان موثرترین راه‌حل جهت کاهش خرابیها مورد استفاده قرار گیرد.
