On the elusive nature of critical (accounting) research

معرفتشناسی یا شناخت‌شناسی شاخه‌ای از فلسفه است که به عنوان نظریه چیستی معرفت و راه‌های حصول آن تعریف می‌شود. اصطلاح Epistemology در زبان انگلیسی نخستین بار توسط جیمز فردریک فرایر فیلسوف اسکاتلندی مورد استفاده قرار گرفت. برخی (مثل پارمنیدس الئایی) به خاطر کشف خطای حواس، منکر نقش حواس در ادراکات شده و نقش عقل را برجسته کردند و در مقابل، برخی دیگر (مثل هراکلیتوس) بر فائده حواس تأکید داشته و نقش عقل را نادیده و یا کم ارزش انگاشتند. ولی هیچ کدام از این دو گروه در امکان رسیدن به واقعیت و علم به آن شکی نداشتند. سرانجام این اختلافات باعث شد تا در قرن پنجم قبل از میلاد سوفسطائیان ظهور کردند که اساساً منکر اصل واقعیتهای خارجی شدند. بعد از این دوره «مسئله شناخت» به صورت جدی‌تر مطرح شد و سقراط و سپس افلاطون و بعد ارسطو؛ به مخالفت با آراء سوفسطائیان پرداخته و اصول و قواعدی را به خاطر مقابله با مغالطات و برای درست اندیشیدن و سنجش استدلال‌ها تدوین کردند.
