هوش عاطفی، هوش احساسی یا هوش هیجانی (که ضریب آن با EQ نشان داده می‌شود) شامل شناخت و کنترل عواطف و هیجان‌های خود است. به عبارت دیگر، شخصی که EQ بالایی دارد سه مؤلفهٔ هیجان‌ها را به طور موفقیت آمیزی با یکدیگر تلفیق می‌کند (مؤلفهٔ شناختی، مؤلفهٔ فیزیولوژیکی و مؤلفهٔ رفتاری). اصطلاح هوش اولین بار در سال ۱۹۹۰ روانشناسی بنام سالوی برای بیان کیفیت و درک احساسات افراد، همدردی با احساسات دیگران و توانایی اداره مطلوب خلق و خو به کاربرد. هوش هیجانی از چهار مهارت اصلی تشکیل می‌شود:۱- خودآگاهی: توانایی شناسایی دقیق هیجان‌های خود و آگاهی از آنها به هنگام تولید. خودآگاهی، کنترل تمایلات خود درنحوه واکنش به اوضاع و افراد مختلف را نیز شامل می‌شود. فردی که از هوش هیجانی بالایی برخوردار است، نسبت به احساسات خود، آگاهی بی واسطه و بدون وقفه دارد.۲- خود مدیریتی: یعنی اینکه بتوانید واکنش‌های هیجانی خود را در مقابل همه مردم و شرایط مختلف کنترل کنید. ۳- آگاهی اجتماعی: توانایی در تشخیص دقیق هیجانات دیگران و درک اینکه دقیقاً چه اتفاقی در حال روی دادن است. این موضوع اغلب به این معناست که طرز تفکر و احساسات دیگران را درک می‌کنید، حتی زمانی که خودتان همان احساسات یا تفکرات راندارید و این همان همدلی است. ۴- مدیریت رابطه: توانایی در به کارگیری ((آگاهی از هیجانات دیگران)) به منظور موفقیت درکنترل و مدیریت تعامل‌ها، همچنین این توانایی، ارتباط واضح با شرایط و کنترل موثر تعارض‌های دشوار را شامل می‌شود.
