Perioperative services require the orchestration of multiple staff, space and equipment. Our aim was to identify whether the implementation of operations management and an electronic health record (EHR) improved perioperative performance.

Operations management and the EHR provided multiple process improvement changes, the garnering of credible data, and the ability to promptly share critical information with staff. The goal of improving metrics was enhanced by the ability to measure service and individual provider performance. This capacity became clearly beneficial where a small number of surgeons and anesthesiologists were found to account for a disproportionate number of delays. Implementation of operations management strategies allowed us to shift cases between facilities, reallocate OR blocks, increase first case on time starts four fold, and operations by 35%, and was associated with a 53% increase in operating revenue. The fact that revenue increase was greater than operative volume (53% vs. 35%) suggests improved performance.
