اصطلاح بازارهای نوظهور یا (در حال ظهور) نخستین بار توسط اقتصاددانان شرکت مالی بین المللی (IFC) در سال 1981 پیشنهاد گردید، یعنی در شرایطی که گروه اقدام به نخستین سرمایه گذاری مالی دوجانبه در امر توسعه کشورها نمود. از آن زمان تاکنون اصطلاح "بازارهای نوظهور" در تمامی زمینه ها شامل رسانه، سیاست خارجی و مباحث تجاری، اطلاع نامه های سرمایه گذاری و گزارشات سالیانه به دفعات بکار رفته است. راه اندازی و کاربرد این اقتصادهای عظیم در زمینه های سرمایه گذاری جهانی، فناوری و استعدادها طی دو دهه اخیر، به ایجاد تغییر و تحول اساسی در محیط های اقتصادی و کسب و کار آنها منجر شده است. از این رو، نرخ های رشد تولید ناخالص داخلی (GDP) در این کشورها بطرز شگفت آوری از مرز اقتصادهای توسعه یافته گذشته که به نوبه خود موجب نجات میلیونها نفر از زیر خط فقر، ایجاد قشرهای متوسط جدید و توسعه و گسترش بازارهای جدید برای ارائه محصولات و خدمات موردنیاز مصرف کنندگان گردیده است. ضمناً وجود نیروی کار فراوان و کم هزینه که هر روز به تعداد تحصیل کرده های آن نیز اضافه می شود، امکان بهره جویی بیشتر و رقابت فاحش در زمینه تولید را برای این بازارها فراهم آورده و فناوری اطلاعات نیز فرصت استثمار نیروی کار در این بازارها را بطور گسترده در اختیار شرکت ها قرار می دهد.
