اقتصاد رفتاری رشته‌ای است که با روش علمی در فضای روان‌شناسی شناختی٬ فاکتورهای مربوط به احساسات و اجتماع را در تحلیل و فهم بازارها و عوامل اقتصادی به کار می‌گیرد. هسته اصلی اقتصاد رفتاری مبتنی بر این رویکرد است که با داشتن دیدی روانشناسانه به انسان، فروضی که اقتصاددان در مورد انسان در نظر می‌گیرد بسی واقعی‌تر از فروض کلاسیک اقتصادی است که تنها مبتنی بر انسان عقلایی بیشینه‌ساز سود است. با وجود فروض واقعی‌تر از انسان، تحلیل‌ها و پیش‌بینی‌های اقتصادی بهتر شده و در نتیجه سیاستگذاری‌های بهتری نیز می‌توان انجام داد. بحث در اقتصاد رفتاری ابداً این نیست که تمامی روش‌ها در جریان رایج اقتصادی که مبتنی بر بیشینه‌سازی، تعادل و کارایی است، باید رد شود. در واقع اقتصاددانان رفتاری از این روش‌ها استفاده می‌کنند، زیرا این روش‌ها یک قالب نظری را شکل می‌دهند که در آن می‌توان تقریباً هر رفتار اقتصادی را تحلیل کرد و در عین حال به پیش‌بینی‌های قابل رد که علمی‌ترین نوع پیش‌بینی است، دست زد.
