مدل های اقتصاد سنجی در واقع همان مدل های آماری مورد استفاده در اقتصاد سنجی هستند. مدلهای اقتصادسنجی، یکی از ابزارهایی هستند که اقتصاددان‌ها برای پیش‌بینی تغییرات آتی اقتصاد از آن‌ها استفاده می‌کنند. به ساده‌ترین بیان، متخصصین اقتصادسنجی روابط گذشته میان متغیرهایی از قبیل مخارج مصرفی، درآمد خانوار، نرخ‌های مالیاتی، نرخ‌های بهره، اشتغال و... را اندازه‌گیری کرده و سپس سعی می‌کنند چگونگی اثرگذاری تغییر برخی از متغیرها بر مسیر آتی سایر آن‌ها را پیش‌بینی کنند. یک مدل اقتصادسنجی در صورتی کامل نامیده می‌شود که حاوی معادلاتی کافی جهت پیش‌بینی مقادیر تمامی متغیرهای موجود در آن باشد. در واقع مدلهای اقتصادسنجی، هیچ گاه واقعا کامل نمی‌باشند. همه مدل‌ها متغیرهایی را در خود دارند که قادر به پیش‌بینی آن‌ها نیستند؛ چراکه توسط نیروهایی «خارج» از مدل تعیین می‌گردند.
